The Department of Materials Science mourns the loss of Susanne Michler
Suddenly and completely unexpectedly for all of us, Susanne Michler passed away on November 5, 2025.
Susanne was closely connected to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (WW) for almost her entire life: 40 years ago, she and a friend attended a taster course at the department and discovered her fascination for materials science. This fascination never left her. After graduating with a degree in materials science, she worked for many, many years at the Chair of Polymers (LSP) and was known to both staff and students as a friendly and helpful colleague whose door was always open to everyone.
Ten years ago, Susanne also began working as a student advisor at the department’s Student Service Center. During this time, she not only helped countless students with their problems, sent them on excursions and abroad as an Erasmus representative, and advised and informed them on all aspects of everyday student life. She also did what had originally brought her to materials science herself: she introduced young people to this exciting field at trade fairs, study information days, and university open houses, spreading the fascination she herself had discovered many years ago.
But it wasn’t just students who benefited from Susanne’s friendly and open manner, her respectful treatment of others, and her helpfulness. Her colleagues at the Student Service Center, for whom she always had an open ear, a broad shoulder, and a comforting, helpful, or cheerful word (depending on what was needed), as well as the other employees in the department, also benefited greatly.
Our sincere condolences go out to her family, who were always the most important thing in her life.
Susanne, we will miss you!
