Biomaterials are the subject of extensive contemporary material development. Examples include artificial hip joints, supports for dental implants, cartilage and bone replacement materials. In addition, we are interested in new methods of generating biomaterials, such as the use of biocompatible substrates for the regeneration of heart tissue as well as nanostructured bioactive scaffolds for tissue engineering and bio-soluble excipients for drug delivery. Their successful use depends on reliable interaction between different material groups, requiring a focus on strength and surface finish, longevity and/or controlled bio-solubility in addition to biocompatibility.
