We are delighted to share that Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Head of the Institute of Biomaterials (WW7), will be receiving the Larry L. Hench Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bioceramics Division of the The American Ceramic Society this year. The Award for innovation is given annually to deserving individual(s) in recognition of lifetime dedication, vision, and accomplishments in advancing the field of Bioceramics, particularly towards innovation in the field. Professor Larry Hench was a true pioneer of innovation in ceramic and glass materials, who is specially known for his invention of Bioglass, the first synthetic biomaterial discovered to form a bond with bone.

Prof. Boccaccini said: “This is a tremendous honor, especially meaningful because my collaboration with Prof. Larry Hench at Imperial College London almost 25 years ago was a defining moment in my career. It inspired and influenced my research in biomaterials, with a focus on bioactive glasses. This award is, without a doubt, a recognition of the outstanding contributions of all members of my research group, past and present, both at Imperial and at the Institute of Biomaterials at FAU, as well as the many researchers worldwide with whom I have had the pleasure to collaborate over the years. Their dedication and hard work have made this achievement possible.”

Prof. Boccaccini will present the lecture: “Larry Hench’s Insights and Ionic Medicine: Current and Future Opportunities for Bioactive Glasses” at MS&T25: Materials Science & Technology Conference to be held on September 28–October 1, 2025, in Columbus, OH, USA.
